SUMMARY REPORT ON THE “TENIS PARA TODO EL MUNDO” PROGRAMME IN LEON MEXICO DURING 2024

As it has been since its beginnings, the principal objective of this programme is to provide a better quality of life, thru tennis, to underprivileged kids.

The programme gives the kids a healthy alternative to alcohol consumption and drug abuse. It also promotes discipline, self-confidence and teamwork and strengthens their sense of belonging and commitment to society.

February 8, we started our weekly training sessions, Tuesdays thru Fridays, and thru June we worked with 58 kids, 31 girls and 27 boys, from 2nd to 6th grade of an elementary public school. This marked the 13th anniversary of the programme.

Most of these kids had been part of the programme for several years and they were able to perform quite well during the training sessions, specially when playing points or games that involved consistency and placing the ball.

April 25, we celebrated Kids Day, fun games and 8 kids, based on merit, received a new pair of tennis shoes thru a private donation.

End of May, 4 of the most experience players participated in a round-robin tournament, for beginners, ages 12 & 14, held at a local club and supervised by one of the coaches.

In August, at the start of the school year, a new principal was appointed at the school we had been working with. Such principal was against the running of the programme, arguing security issues. We then looked for an alternate school and found one whose principal gladly supported the programme. Nevertheless, we had to start in September with a whole new group of kids.

We started with 26 kids and by the end of November we had 47 kids, 25 girls and 22 boys. Working with this new school, a few parents attended the daily sessions and helped keep an eye on the kids (specially when they had to go to the bathroom) and they cheer them through the various drills and games.

November 15 one of the IC Mexico members attended the training session and congratulated the coaches on a well-run programmer.

November 28 closing day of the training sessions.
